What You Need to Know About Secondary Glazing

Secondary glazing is exactly what you would think it is. It is effectively another window on the inside of your original window. The secondary glazing is fitted behind the window with the frame matching that of the existing window so it can hardly be noticed, and it has been specially designed to be installed sympathetically alongside your existing windows.

We can design our secondary glazing in varying styles, which include:

  • Casement (Hinged)
  • Sash
  • Horizontal Sliders
  • Lift Out Windows

No more Noise Pollution

Living in a noisy area can be a nuisance. Noise pollution is something that can be dealt with easily, but not always effectively. Adding heavy curtains or just installing double glazing will give you some success in noise reduction, however the most efficient way to bring peace and quiet to your home in a busy area is through secondary glazing. With secondary glazing installed, we can realistically look at reducing your noise levels from outside by up to 80%, and even up to 90% in some cases!

We achieve this reduction in noise by using our special design and manufacturing process to establish the optimum cavity between your existing window and your new secondary glazing unit to effectively minimize the noise that filters through. Efficient noise reduction is best achieved by creating a sufficient cavity between the windows, which reduces the amount of sound waves able to pass through.

Aside from just the cavity providing noise reduction, there are other benefits to noise reduction in a secondary glazing unit. We can install a number of different types of glass in your secondary unit to provide better security, better noise reduction, and better thermal insulation. One of our specialist types of glass for Secondary Glazing is STADIP glass, this is an acoustic glass that provides added noise reduction towards high frequency sounds.

It is for this reason that STADIP glass is a popular choice around airports because of its increased noise reduction capabilities. We also strive to ensure that our secondary glazing units do not leave any gaps around the window frames, just a 1% gap around a frame can cause the noise insulation to increase by up to 10 decibels.

Energy Saving

Windows are amongst the main culprits when it comes to preventable heat loss in your home. In studies conducted at Glasgow Caledonian University’s Centre for Research on Indoor Climate and Health by Paul Baker, it was proven that Secondary Glazing alone offers a 63% reduction in heat loss. As a single deterrent to heat loss, Secondary Glazing was proved to be the most efficient in heat loss prevention. When combined with insulated shutters, you can expect to see a reduction in heat loss up to almost 80%. The secondary glazing and the shutters offer increased thermal insulation and help to eliminate draughts in the building by providing solid seals with no gaps.

Most listed homes or those in conservation areas only have single glazed units and because of the status of these buildings, many can’t have double glazing fitted or remove the original windows. English heritage, the leading organisation in the protection and preservation of historical properties advocates the use of secondary glazing to provide heat insulation and noise insulation in properties with single glazing that can’t be replaced with double glazing. Secondary Glazing is perfect for listed buildings as it will not interfere with the façade of the original windows in place and is hardly noticeable from the inside.
